Twelve & a Half Acres

From command to craft: A distillery built on passion and place

Nestled on a spectacular hillside property in Hunchy is the hinterland’s newest distillery. Twelve & a Half Acres is a labour of love and a return to his farming roots for founder Andrew Lancaster, following a distinguished 35-year military career.

Born in rural England, Andrew grew up in a vibrant farming community.

“My hard-working and hugely supportive parents gave me the encouragement within this tight-knit environment that laid the foundation of my formative years,” Andrew said.

“The military was a natural progression for me, with its endless challenges. It gave me a chance to channel my enthusiasm and energy into serving something greater,” he said. “I loved the everchanging, demanding nature of it. From serving in the Royal Navy to the Royal Australian Air Force, my military journey was diverse and dynamic. During my service, I held six command positions, flew on multiple types of aircraft, deployed on multiple operations and received medals. I was fortunate to have worked for and with some incredible people.”

When his military career came to an end, Andrew was driven to pursue interests that satisfied his creative temperament and deep love of the land.

“For me, Twelve & a Half Acres is a venture that combines my love for nature and the outdoors with the need for a challenge,” he said. “My aim was to create a premium product that people would love, and I have dedicated the past three years to continual self-education.”

Andrew has attained a WSET Level 3 in Spirits, a qualification held by only a very small group in Australia.

He has developed a range of exceptional gin using traditional methods of distilling, with no chemicals or additives, and infused with unique local botanicals.

“I like to think my gin sings the song of Australia,” Andrew said.

The Twelve & a Half Acres range offers a taste experience deeply rooted in Australia’s vibrant landscapes.

“My gin can be savoured neat or mixed into your favourite cocktail. Each gin in the product range offers a distinct, inspired flavour profile,” he said. “Whether it’s our Montville Dry Gin with its rich pepper berry notes or our Lemon Myrtle Gin that’s perfect for a classic gin sling cocktail, we’ve got a taste to tantalise every palate.”

As testimony to the fact that Twelve and a Half Acres spirits reflect the landscape of Australia, Qantas have picked up the Montville Dry Gin to be served in the Brisbane Business Lounge.

“My land, the Twelve & a Half Acres, is a sanctuary to me and I am committed to making it even better. This extends to my involvement in local initiatives like ‘Care for Wildlife’, where I help clear invasive species and plant native trees to enhance the koala habitat on the property,” said Andy.

“It gives me great pleasure to invite you all to become a part of my journey. Welcome to Twelve & a Half Acres – it’s more than a business; it’s my heart and soul.”
